ChatGPT vs Claude

Two leading American assistants with different strengths. Here is how they compare on writing, coding, documents and privacy, and which one suits you.

The short answer

ChatGPT and Claude are the two best-known general AI assistants from American labs, and both are excellent for everyday writing, questions and coding. The difference is in emphasis. ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is the broader all-rounder: it has more built-in features, including image generation, interactive answers and a large ecosystem of custom GPTs. Claude, made by Anthropic, is often preferred for long documents, natural-sounding writing and agent-style coding work. If you can, try both on a task you actually do; the free plans are enough to feel the difference.

Writing and everyday help

Both assistants write well, but they have different personalities. ChatGPT tends to be energetic and quick to offer structure: headings, bullet lists, options and follow-up suggestions. Since the GPT-6 update it can also mix text with visuals and small interactive tools when that helps. Claude tends to write in a calmer, more natural voice and is good at keeping a consistent tone across a long piece, which is why many writers and editors like it for drafts and rewrites.

For quick everyday questions, the gap is small. Either one can plan a trip, explain a bill, draft a message or help you study. Your choice may come down to which style you find easier to read. Whichever you use, a clear prompt matters more than the brand; our guide on how to write good prompts shows how.

Coding and technical work

Both are strong coding assistants for explaining errors, writing functions and reviewing code. The bigger difference is in their dedicated tools. Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for developers: it works in your terminal or editor, reads a project, edits several files and runs commands with your approval. OpenAI's Codex fills the same role on the ChatGPT side. Developers often try both and keep the one that fits their workflow. If you are learning to code, either is fine; see our AI for coding guide for good habits such as testing every suggestion.

Files, research and long documents

Both can read PDFs, spreadsheets and images. Claude has a reputation for handling long documents carefully, such as comparing two contracts or summarizing a long report without losing track of details, and its Artifacts panel makes it easy to turn the result into a reusable document or chart. ChatGPT offers a wider range of file and data tools, built-in image creation and editing, and projects with memory. For long research tasks, both offer deeper research modes that collect sources and write a report; in each case, open the sources yourself before you rely on them.

Plans, apps and availability

Both have free plans, and both put their strongest models and highest limits behind paid plans. ChatGPT's free plan uses a lighter variant of its main model, while Claude's free plan has tighter usage limits that you notice sooner in long chats or with large files. Both offer apps for the web, iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. One practical difference is reach: Claude is only offered in supported countries, so check that it is available where you live before you plan around it. Both also sell business plans with admin controls for teams.

Privacy and data

Neither company uses chats from its business or API products for training by default, but consumer plans work differently. On ChatGPT's individual plans, training on your chats is on unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls; temporary chats are never used for training. On Claude's consumer plans you choose whether chats help improve Claude, and you can change it under Settings, then Privacy; incognito chats are never used for training. If you allow training, Anthropic may keep de-identified data for up to five years. With either service, avoid pasting passwords, ID numbers or confidential data.
