Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers about using the chat, your history and share links, the tools and assistants, the model menu, privacy and ads.
Using the chat
What is ChatG?
ChatG is a free AI chat and assistant that runs in your web browser. You can ask questions, draft and edit texts, translate, summarize long documents, get help with code or homework, and brainstorm ideas. Around the chat you will find ready-made assistants, a prompt library, twelve AI tools and practical guides. It is an independent website, not a product of any AI company.
Is it really free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free, and no account is needed. You don't register, log in or give us your email address to use the chat. Open the chat and start typing. The service is paid for by ads shown around the content, never inside the assistant's answers.
How many messages can I send per day?
Every visitor gets a daily allowance of free messages. The allowance is shared between the chat and the AI tool pages, and it resets every day. The counter at the top of the chat shows how many free messages you have left today. When you run out, you can still read, search and export your saved conversations, and you can continue tomorrow. The allowance keeps the service free and protects it from automated abuse.
Does ChatG work on my phone?
Yes. ChatG works in any modern browser on Android phones, iPhones, tablets and computers. There is no app to install. On a phone, the chat history opens as a side drawer, and the message box stays at the bottom of the screen. Keep in mind that your history is saved per browser, so conversations from your laptop won't appear on your phone unless you export and import them.
How do I get better answers?
Be specific. Say what you want, who it is for, how long it should be and in what tone. Paste the text you want worked on instead of describing it, and give an example of the result you like when you can. If the first answer misses, reply with what to change rather than starting over. The guide to writing prompts has many before-and-after examples, and the prompt library gives you ready-made starting points.
Can ChatG be wrong?
Yes. AI language models can state incorrect facts with confidence, misunderstand a question, invent sources or rely on outdated information. Check important facts, figures, quotes and references with reliable sources before you use them. ChatG provides general information only; it does not replace professional medical, legal or financial advice. Our guide on how to fact-check AI answers explains quick ways to verify what you read.
History and sharing
Where are my conversations saved?
Only in your browser, on the device you are using. ChatG stores your history in your browser's local storage, not on our servers. That means nobody else can browse your history through our site, but it also means we cannot recover it for you. Clearing your browser's site data or browsing history for chatg.org, using a private window, or switching browsers or devices will leave you with an empty history.
How do I keep or move my chat history?
Use Export. You can export a single conversation as Markdown, plain text or JSON, or export all your conversations as one JSON file from the sidebar or the settings. To move your history to another browser or device, open ChatG there and use Import with that JSON file. Imported conversations are merged with the ones already in that browser.
Can I search, rename or pin conversations?
Yes. The search box in the sidebar finds conversations by title and by the text of the messages. You can rename any conversation, pin the important ones so they stay at the top, and delete the ones you no longer need. Conversations are grouped by date: Today, Yesterday, Previous 7 days, Previous 30 days and Older.
How do share links work, and who can see them?
The Share button publishes a read-only copy of the current conversation at an address like chatg.org/s/ followed by a code. Anyone who has the link can read it, so share it only with people you want to see it. Shared pages are marked so that search engines don't index them. The copy is a snapshot: later messages in your chat are not added, and you cannot edit the shared copy. Visitors can press "Continue this chat" to copy the conversation into their own browser history. Before sharing, remove anything personal from the conversation.
How do I delete a shared conversation?
Email hello@chatg.org or use the contact form and include the full share link. We will remove it. Deleting the conversation from your own history does not delete the shared copy, because the shared copy is stored separately on our server. If you see a shared page that contains harmful or illegal content, use the Report button on that page.
Tools and assistants
What are assistants?
Assistants are ready-made roles for the chat, such as Writing Assistant, Translator, Code Helper, Study Tutor or Interview Coach. Each one comes with its own instructions that shape how the AI responds, what it asks you and which limits it respects. Choosing an assistant starts a new conversation with that role. A small label above the message box shows which assistant you are chatting with, and you can switch back to the standard ChatG at any time. See all of them on the assistants page.
Can I create my own assistant?
Yes. In the chat, open Assistants and choose Create assistant. Give it a name, a short description, instructions that describe how it should behave, and up to three conversation starters. Your own assistants are saved in your browser, just like your history, so export your data if you want to keep them when you change devices.
What are the AI tools, and how are they different from the chat?
Each AI tool is a page built for one job, such as the summarizer, email writer, math solver or cover letter writer. You paste your text, pick a few options like tone or length and press Generate. The tool builds a well-structured request for you. If you want to keep working on the result, press "Continue in chat", which saves it as a new conversation. Tool uses count toward the same daily allowance as chat messages.
How do I use the prompt library?
The prompt library has two hundred prompts in ten categories, such as writing, study and career. Each prompt has blanks in square brackets, like [topic] or [audience]. Press "Use in chat" or Insert, replace the blanks with your details and send. The same library is available inside the chat from the Prompts button.
Models
Which AI model powers ChatG?
ChatG sends your messages to AI language models through its own processing service. We don't disclose which model produces the answers, and the assistant itself won't share that either. What matters for you is the quality of the answers and how your data is handled, which we describe in the Privacy Policy.
What does the model menu in the chat do?
The menu lets you pick the answer style you prefer for a conversation, such as ChatG Auto for balanced everyday answers or a style that suits step-by-step reasoning or longer writing. Your choice is saved with each conversation and shown in the chat. The menu is a style preference; it is not a way to reach a particular company's product.
Is ChatG the same as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
No. ChatG is an independent website and is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or any other AI company. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and the other names belong to their owners. If you want to use those products, go to their official websites or apps. Our model guides explain who makes each one and how to access it officially.
Why do you publish guides about other AI models?
Because people often ask how the well-known AI assistants differ and which one suits a task. Our guides, such as Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT vs Claude, are independent overviews written for readers. They are not sponsored, and they describe each model's maker, strengths, limits and official ways to use it.
Privacy and ads
Do you read or store my messages?
Your history lives only in your browser. To generate an answer, your messages are sent through our processing service to an AI model provider. We don't keep your conversations beyond short technical logs used to keep the service running and to prevent abuse, and we don't sell your messages. Even so, avoid typing passwords, card numbers, health records or other sensitive personal information into any AI chat. Read more in the AI privacy and safety guide.
Why are there ads, and do they affect answers?
Ads pay for the AI processing that makes the free daily messages possible. Our advertising partner is Ezoic, which shows ads around the page content and in the chat sidebar on larger screens. Ads are never inserted into the assistant's answers, and advertisers have no influence on what the assistant writes. Depending on where you live, you may see a consent banner that lets you choose how ad cookies are used.
Do you use cookies and analytics?
Yes. Our advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads, and we use Google Analytics on every page to understand how the site is used, such as which pages are visited and from which kinds of devices. Your browser also stores your chat history and settings locally, which is needed for the chat to work. The Privacy Policy explains each of these and how to opt out.
Is ChatG suitable for children?
ChatG is not intended for children under 13. Teenagers should use it with the guidance of a parent or teacher, especially for schoolwork. AI answers can be inaccurate, and the chat is not designed as a children's service.
How can I contact you?
Email hello@chatg.org or use the contact form. Write to us with questions, bug reports, feature ideas, requests to remove a shared conversation or copyright notices.
