AI Code Assistant
Paste code or describe what you want to build. Get working code in formatted blocks, clear explanations, bug fixes, reviews and tests.
What the Code Assistant does
The Code Assistant helps you write, understand and improve code. Describe a function you need and get working code with a short explanation. Paste code you do not understand and get a plain-language walkthrough. Paste an error and get the likely cause and a fix. It can also review code, add comments and docstrings, convert code between languages and write unit tests.
All code comes back in formatted code blocks with a language label and a Copy button, so you can move it into your editor in one click.
How to use it
- Paste your code or describe the task in the input box. Include the error message if there is one, and say what you expected to happen.
- Choose the task: write code, explain code, find and fix a bug, review and improve, add comments and docs, convert to another language, or write tests.
- Select the programming language, or leave it on "Detect automatically". It covers Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C#, C++, C, Go, Rust, PHP, Ruby, Swift, Kotlin, SQL, Bash and HTML with CSS. When converting, this is the target language.
- Press Generate. Copy the code, Regenerate for an alternative approach, or Continue in chat to iterate on it.
Explanations are written in the language you use in your request; code and identifiers stay as they are.
Tips for better results
- Share the error and the context. The full error message, the line it points to and what you were trying to do are worth more than any description.
- Name versions and constraints. "Python 3, standard library only" or "React with hooks, no extra packages" prevents answers you cannot use.
- Keep snippets focused. Paste the function or file that matters rather than a whole project. Remove unrelated code.
- Ask for tests. After generating a function, run the "Write tests" task on it. Tests show quickly whether the code does what you need.
- Iterate in the chat. Real programming is a conversation: run the code, paste the new error, ask again.
Our guide to AI for coding covers good habits in more depth, and the coding prompts give you ready-made requests for common tasks.
Example
Task: Find and fix a bug. Input:
const user = { name: 'Ana' };
console.log(user.Name); // prints undefined
Result: Property names in JavaScript are case-sensitive. The object defines
namein lowercase, but the code readsName, which does not exist, so the result isundefined. Use the exact property name:
const user = { name: 'Ana' };
console.log(user.name); // prints "Ana"
Limits and safe use
- Test before you ship. AI-written code can contain subtle bugs, outdated APIs or edge cases it did not consider. Run it, test it and read it before using it in production.
- Review security carefully. Check anything that handles passwords, payments, user input, file paths or database queries. Use parameterized queries and established libraries for authentication and cryptography.
- Never paste secrets. Remove API keys, passwords, tokens and customer data from code before pasting it anywhere, including here. See our AI privacy and safety guide.
- Respect licenses. Check that suggested libraries fit your project's license, and follow your employer's rules about AI tools.
- No malicious code. The assistant declines to write malware or tools for breaking into systems you are not authorized to access.
FAQ
Is the Code Assistant free?
Yes. No sign-up is required. Every visitor gets a daily allowance of free messages, shared with the chat and all tools, which resets every day.
Can it run my code?
No. It reads and writes code but does not execute it. Run the code in your own environment and paste back any errors.
Can it work with a whole project?
Not at once. The input holds a few thousand characters, so paste the relevant files or functions and describe how they fit together. For longer work, Continue in chat and share the code piece by piece.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes. Choose "Explain code" and ask for simple language, or start a coding chat and ask it to explain each line of a solution.
Which languages are supported?
The menu lists the most common languages, but it can also help with others. Leave the setting on "Detect automatically" and name the language in your request.
