ChatGPT vs Gemini
A standalone all-rounder against an assistant built into Google's apps. See how they differ on features, multimodal work and privacy.
The short answer
ChatGPT and Gemini are the two most widely used AI assistants, and both can handle everyday questions, writing, coding, images and voice. The main difference is where they fit into your life. ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is a standalone all-rounder with a large ecosystem of custom GPTs and new interactive answers. Gemini, made by Google, is built into Google's world: Android, Chrome, Gmail, Docs, Drive, Maps and Search. If your day already runs on Google apps, Gemini can save you steps. If you want one flexible assistant that works the same everywhere, ChatGPT is the safer default.

Everyday use and writing
For everyday questions, drafting emails or explaining a topic, both assistants are capable and the difference is mostly style. ChatGPT tends to give well-structured answers and, since the GPT-6 update, can add charts, diagrams and small interactive tools to a reply. Gemini's answers often include links to related content from the web, and Google says its newest model hedges less and gets to the point faster. Both let you set custom instructions, and both have memory features you can turn off.
Writing quality is close. Whichever you pick, you will get better results with specific prompts, so it is worth reading our guide on how to write good prompts and trying the AI writer tool for quick drafts.
Photos, video and multimodal work
Gemini was designed from the start to work with text, images, audio and video together, and it is especially strong when you show it something: a photo of a broken appliance, a screenshot, a chart or a long video. Gemini Live on phones lets you point your camera at an object and talk about it. ChatGPT also reads images and files well, has a polished voice mode, and creates and edits images directly in the chat. For video generation, Gemini's paid plans include Google's Veo models.
Google apps versus a broad ecosystem
Gemini's biggest advantage is integration. With your permission it can search your Gmail, summarize a Drive file, check your Calendar or pull directions from Maps, all from one chat. It also appears in Google Search through AI Mode and in Chrome. ChatGPT connects to many apps too, through connectors and custom GPTs, and runs the same way on every platform, which suits people who use a mix of services rather than Google for everything.
Free plans and limits
Both free plans are useful but limited. As of October 2026, ChatGPT's free plan uses a lighter variant of GPT-6, and Gemini's free app chooses the model automatically, sending most prompts to its fastest Flash-Lite model and harder ones to stronger models. On both, the newest and strongest models, higher limits and extras such as video creation or the deepest reasoning modes require a paid plan. Gemini's limits depend on how heavy each request is, so long chats with big files use your allowance faster. If you mainly ask short everyday questions, either free plan will usually be enough.
Privacy and data
The two handle data differently. In ChatGPT's individual plans, OpenAI may use your chats for training unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls; temporary chats are never used for training and are deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. In Gemini, the Keep Activity setting is on by default for adults: your chats are saved to your Google account, may be used to improve Google's services including AI models, and a subset is read by trained human reviewers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. You can turn Keep Activity off or use temporary chats. For both, keep sensitive personal data out of the chat.
