Claude vs Gemini
Anthropic's focused writer and coder against Google's multimodal assistant. Here is where each one is stronger and how they treat your data.
The short answer
Claude and Gemini are both top-tier AI assistants that handle writing, analysis, coding and long documents well. They lean in different directions. Claude, made by Anthropic, is a focused assistant known for careful, natural writing, close instruction-following and agent-style coding through Claude Code. Gemini, made by Google, is a multimodal assistant woven into Google's apps, strong with photos, audio and video, and able to create images and videos. Writers and developers often lean toward Claude; people who live in Gmail, Docs and Android often lean toward Gemini.

Writing and editing
Claude has a strong reputation with writers. It tends to keep a consistent voice across a long draft, respects style guides and explains its edits clearly, which makes it a good partner for rewriting, tightening and restructuring text. Gemini writes well too and is often more direct; it is convenient when the text you are working on already lives in Google Docs or Gmail, because it can help right there. For short pieces such as emails and captions, both do the job, and the difference is mostly taste. Try the same prompt in both and keep the one whose style you prefer; our AI writing tips help either way.
Long documents and research
Both handle very long inputs, so you can give them a whole report, a contract or a large part of a codebase. Claude is often praised for careful reading: comparing two versions of a document, spotting inconsistencies and quoting the relevant parts. Gemini's strength is variety: alongside long PDFs it handles spreadsheets, slides, images, audio recordings and videos, and Deep Research can build a cited report from many web sources. Claude's paid plans include a Research mode as well. Whichever you use, open the sources and check key facts; our guide on fact-checking AI answers shows how.
Coding
For developers, Claude Code is a major reason to choose Claude: it works in your terminal or editor, reads a project, changes several files and runs commands with your approval. Gemini's stronger tiers are also good at code, and Google offers Google AI Studio and its Antigravity coding environment, which is now available inside the Gemini app on Mac. Both can explain code, find bugs and write tests in the chat. Our AI for coding guide covers safe habits, such as reviewing every change before you run it.
Plans and availability
Both offer a free plan, but the free experiences differ. Gemini's free app now chooses the model for you and sends most prompts to its lightest model, with the newest Gemini 4 Argon reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Claude's free plan gives you a capable model but tighter usage limits, and tools such as Claude Code and Research are part of paid plans. Gemini comes bundled with many Google Workspace accounts, which matters if your school or employer already pays for it. Claude is only offered in supported countries, so check availability where you live.
Privacy and data
On Claude's consumer plans you decide whether your chats are used to train future models, in Settings under Privacy ("Help improve Claude"). If you allow it, Anthropic may keep de-identified data for up to five years; incognito chats are never used for training. On Gemini, the Keep Activity setting is on by default for adults. While it is on, your chats are saved to your Google account and may be used to improve Google's services, and a subset is read by trained human reviewers, with reviewed chats kept for up to three years. You can turn Keep Activity off or use temporary chats; even then, Google keeps chats for up to 72 hours to run the service. With either assistant, keep passwords and confidential data out.
