Grok vs ChatGPT
Grok brings real-time X posts and a casual tone; ChatGPT brings breadth and polish. See how they compare and which one fits your needs.
The short answer
Grok and ChatGPT are both general AI assistants with free and paid plans, and both can chat, code, analyze files, talk by voice and create images. Their characters are different. Grok, made by xAI (now part of SpaceX and branded SpaceXSI), is closely tied to the social network X: it can pull in what people are posting right now and has a casual, sometimes irreverent tone. ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is the broader and more measured all-rounder, with a large ecosystem, interactive answers and polished apps. If you follow news and trends on X, Grok is worth a try. For most other uses, ChatGPT is the safer default.

Real-time information and news
Grok's signature feature is its connection to X. It can search recent posts and the web, which makes it quick at answering "what are people saying about…" questions during breaking news, sports events or product launches. That speed comes with a risk: posts on X can be rumors, jokes or misinformation, and Grok can repeat them. ChatGPT also searches the web and shows sources, but it does not have the same direct window into social posts. For anything important, open the original sources and look for confirmation from established outlets. Our guide on fact-checking AI answers shows a simple routine.
Personality and safety
xAI designed Grok to be witty, direct and willing to engage with edgy questions, and many people enjoy that style. ChatGPT is more neutral by default, though you can ask it to be more casual or set custom instructions. Grok has drawn public criticism several times for offensive or misleading answers, and xAI has adjusted its instructions and safeguards in response. ChatGPT has faced criticism too, but its default style is more cautious. If you are choosing an assistant for a classroom, a family or a workplace, that difference matters.
Features, coding and creativity
Both handle coding, writing, file analysis and voice. Grok's flagship model is aimed at coding and agent tasks with adjustable reasoning effort, and higher paid plans include Grok Bot, which works on tasks on a persistent cloud computer. Grok Imagine creates images and short videos. ChatGPT offers image creation and editing, interactive answers with charts and small tools, custom GPTs, projects, memory and the Codex coding agent. Overall, ChatGPT has the larger ecosystem, while Grok is attractive if you already pay for X.
Plans and pricing model
Both start free with limited use. ChatGPT sells its own plans, from Go and Plus to Pro for individuals and Business and Enterprise for teams. In October 2026, xAI introduced The X Subscription, which bundles Grok usage with X Premium benefits in several tiers, while older SuperGrok and X Premium plans continue for existing subscribers. Grok's paid plans now use a shared weekly usage pool across chat, voice, image and video features rather than separate daily limits. If you do not use X, that bundle may matter less to you; if you do, it can be good value. Prices change often, so compare the official pages before you subscribe.
Privacy and data
With Grok, check two places. On grok.com and in the Grok apps, go to Settings, then Data controls, and turn off "Improve the model". If you use X, your public posts and Grok interactions on X may be used for training unless you untick the options under Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Grok and Third-party Collaborators. Protected accounts are not used. With ChatGPT, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls, or use temporary chats, which are not used for training. In both cases, opting out applies to future data, and you should keep passwords and confidential information out of the chat. See our AI privacy and safety guide.
