Gemini: a plain-English guide

What Google's Gemini is, how its model tiers fit together, where it shines with photos, video and Google apps, and how its privacy settings work.

What Gemini is and who makes it

Gemini is Google's family of AI models and also the name of its AI assistant app. The models are built by Google DeepMind, Google's AI research lab. Gemini replaced Google's earlier chatbot, Bard, and today it is built into many Google products: the Gemini app, Android phones, the Chrome browser, Gmail and Docs, and AI Mode in Google Search.

From the start, Google designed Gemini to be multimodal, which means it can work with text, images, audio, video and PDFs rather than text alone. That, plus its links to the Google apps you may already use, is what sets it apart from most other assistants.

The Gemini model family

Google releases new Gemini versions often, so version numbers date quickly. The tier names are more useful:

  • Flash-Lite is the fastest and lightest tier, used for quick everyday answers and high-volume jobs.
  • Flash is a fast, capable middle tier that balances speed and quality.
  • Pro is the stronger tier for complex reasoning, coding and long documents.
  • Gemini 4 Argon is Google's newest frontier model as of October 2026, aimed at the hardest reasoning, coding, research and long-running tasks. In the Gemini app it is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

In the free Gemini app, Google now picks the model for you: most prompts go to Flash-Lite, and prompts that need deeper reasoning may be routed to a stronger model. Google also makes separate models for images (Nano Banana) and video (Veo), which power image and video creation in the app. Gemini models themselves are closed, but Google publishes a separate open-weight family called Gemma that developers can download and run on their own hardware.

What Gemini is good at

  • Photos, audio, video and documents. You can show Gemini a picture, a screenshot, a long PDF or a video and ask questions about it.
  • Google integration. With your permission, Gemini can work with Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Maps and YouTube, so you can ask it to find an email or summarize a file in your Drive.
  • Research. Deep Research builds a longer, cited report from many web sources, which is useful for planning or background reading.
  • Creating and editing images. The app can generate and edit images, and paid plans add video generation.
  • Voice and camera. Gemini Live lets you talk to it naturally and, on phones, point your camera at something and ask about it.
  • Custom helpers and drafts. Gems are custom assistants you set up once, and Canvas gives you a shared space for documents and code.
  • Coding. The stronger tiers handle coding well, and Google offers developer tools such as Google AI Studio and its Antigravity coding environment.

Limits to keep in mind

Gemini makes mistakes like every AI model: wrong facts, outdated details or confident answers to questions it cannot really answer. It can also misread an image or a chart. Check important facts, especially for health, legal or financial questions; our guide on fact-checking AI answers can help.

As of October 2026, the free plan is limited to the lighter models with automatic model selection, and the newest model and higher limits require a paid Google AI plan. Usage limits depend on how heavy your requests are. Some features are only available in certain countries, languages or age groups, and if you use a work or school account, your administrator decides which features you get.

How to use Gemini officially

You can use Gemini at gemini.google.com, in the Gemini app for Android and iPhone, inside Google Search through AI Mode, in Chrome, and in Google Workspace apps such as Gmail and Docs. You need a Google account for most features. Paid plans include Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra, which raise limits and unlock stronger models and extra tools. Developers use the Gemini API through Google AI Studio or Google Cloud. The official link in the facts section of this page goes to the Gemini app.

Privacy notes

Gemini's main privacy control is the Keep Activity setting, which is on by default for adults. When it is on, your chats are saved to your Google account, and Google may use them to improve its services, including training AI models. A subset of chats is read by trained human reviewers; reviewed chats are kept separately for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google asks you not to enter confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see.

You can turn Keep Activity off or change auto-delete (18 months by default, with 3 or 36 months as options). With it off, Google still keeps chats for up to 72 hours to run the service. Temporary chats are another option for one-off questions. If you connect Gmail, Drive or Photos, that data is handled under the Gemini privacy notice. How Gemini compares

Gemini is the natural choice if your work already lives in Google's apps or involves photos, audio and video. ChatGPT offers a broad mix of features and a large ecosystem of custom GPTs, while Claude is often preferred for long-form writing and agent-style coding. If you want a model you can host yourself, look at Google's own Gemma or at Llama, Qwen and Mistral. For details, see ChatGPT vs Gemini and Claude vs Gemini.
